Updated to the second release candidate for the vb 4 suite... because the first release candidate never actually made it to the customers. As stated by Don Kuramura on vb "Our original plan was to release RC1 to the community today. However, since releasing Beta 5 and releasing RC1 on vBulletin.com this past Monday, we have fixed more 250 bugs, including new bugs found in RC1. Therefore, we wanted our customers to have access to the most recent build."

250 bugs in a first release candidate? Packed with a number of new features like:
• (new) Forum Sidebar Blocks! Keep track of new posts in Blogs, CMS, Group Discussions. Also new Tag Cloud block and create custom HTML and PHP Blocks.
• (new) Added and finalized Forum StyleVars
• (new) Added new Member Action links. Clicking on a user name link in CMS articles, Forum Postbit, and Blog Posts will display a new pop-up menu of various links (Go to Profile, Send Private Message, View Forum Posts, View Blog Entries, View Articles).
• (new) Added RSS for the CMS
• (new) UTF-8 Friendly URL

Pardon me while I roll my eyes... why they didn't just label this Beta 7 (and RC 1 as Beta 6) is beyond me. *Sigh* I suppose we do want to please the community and actually release the "production" version, now don't we? Well, at least once they do that the skinning folks will get to making new themes (probably now that the stylevars have been locked down) and I can ditch this one. The more I code for an IP board, the more I like it.

I've added a links directory to the site, something I've been meaning to for quite some time. I collect links to various things over time (don't we all), and have been meaning to "store/share" them on the site for a while. There used to be a few threads collecting links in the forums once upon a time, but I haven't gone looking for them yet. I've only managed to add some LotRO links this afternoon after getting the plugin setup.

In addition to getting the links setup, I've finally spent time (after a year!) setting up some general blog categories as well as some of my own. All the handful of blog postings I've managed over the course of the last year or so have been categorized and I've added what seemed like relevant tags to them.

The vbully+ style is the only style other than the default that is user selectable... and even it has some issues. I'm planning on cleaning it up over the course of the next month or so, but as I find it easier on the eyes, I'll let you choose to use it or not. When I get to a style that I like and have customized sufficiently, I'll make whatever that is the default.

There should be links to the various sections (although some of that I have yet to straighten out within each section). That said, here they are: http://forums.eyelleye.net, http://portal.eyelleye.net (still haven't gotten around to doing something with this), http://gallery.eyelleye.net, http://links.eyelleye.net and a redirect to my blog: http://blog.eyelleye.net (of course, the root eyelleye.net address directs here as well for the time being).

It's a freakin' adventure! And oh what an adventure that turned out to be. I must agree that it is definitely easier to get Ubuntu up and running on a PC that already has Windows installed, but I must also admit that I learned a few things along the way.

I ended up needing to completely clean my primary hard-drive, which was still problematic as it turned out. For whatever reason, whenever my pair of backup drives (raid 1, hardware) were plugged in, I was getting a GRUB error (it changed as I mucked about with things). What I finally did was physically un-plug them (couldn't just turn em off as my dvd-rw drive is on the same controller). Once I did that, I was able to get past the GRUB menu/error and install Windows.

So, while doing all of this I thought I'd setup Windows with AHCI running... even had a floppy with the driver for install... but it just would not take. I was able, however, to install Windows with AHCI disabled, then manually extract and add the driver to Windows (after it was installed) and then enable it in the BIOS. That worked... in Ubuntu, it just worked.

So, Windows was installed & happy, and now Ubuntu is up and running. Getting sound to work was an adventure (I've an X-Fi card), but after some additional reading I've got that functional. Suspect I should "take a break" before I break something. =)

Probably not a good philosophy when it comes to installing operating systems. For a brief moment, I had both Ubuntu and Windows installed yesterday, but as it turns out one wasn't happy with the other. The, ever so slightly, funny bit of it was, Windows was the pissed off one. Somewhere in the midst of thises and thatsits, I've managed to get something called GRUB on at least one of my backup SATA drives that are in a RAID 1 setup. For reasons beyond my understanding at this point, Ubuntu sees them as two disks, Windows does not.

So... I nuked the primary drive and got Ubuntu setup on it (after using GParted to manually create the partitions I wanted and read somewhere that was a good idea). Cool. Ubuntu worked from the HDD instead of the CD... but all the guides referenced HDA0 and whatnot, but mine were SDA, SDB and SDC (SD apparently meaning SATA Drive?). The backup drives wanted to call themselves the SDA and SDB drives (no idea why that was the case) and the drive where I wanted shit to go was SDC. Ok, I can roll with that.

Installed Windows on the partition I made for it... we fought a little though, as I wanted to set it up with AHCI and it didna like the driver intel gave me (nice being able to use a live cd to fetch drivers... sucks so few of them are not in something OTHER than .exe... like .zip). So, I set the controller to use neither AHCI nor RAID and Windows made itself happy... and then told Ubuntu to go jump off a bridge. Back to the live cd.

Somewhere in trying to make the two children play nice (I have to admit, Windows was the primary one acting like a spoiled child)... I did something (following some guide no doubt) that put GRUB on one of the backup drives (not where she belongs capn'!). A number of hours today trying thisits and thatsits... I've pulled the cables from the backup drives and that's at least gotten rid of that damn GRUB loader. Windows is up and running at least, and I expect I know what to do to get Ubuntu back. Problem is, what to do about those backup drives. Soon as I plug em in again it'll be problematic I expect.

Well, problems for another day (tomorrow). Can't call me converted just yet.

Being, generally speaking, a Microsoft guy most of the time, I've stayed away from all that hippy linux crap. Half (or better) of my technically minded friends are fairly well absorbed into that cult (with rather blind adherence some of them actually... it's sad), but I've remained unphased by their attempts at conversion. All that said, I've considered it from time to time.

I gave Gentoo a shot once upon a time way back. Wasn't easy to install, lots of configuration options, etc... Spent several days trying to get it to work and worked out various issues. At the time its install guide was... well, half non-existent (I think they were updating it). I was using wireless at the time and ended up running into an issue during install that the manual didn't cover. I went looking in their forums for some information related to the problem and the only post I could find had the 1 line answer to the original poster that said "RTFM." It wasn't meant as humor. At that point I thought they could take their elitist crap and shove it up their ass (and I quite think they may have preferred it that way... STFU noob n all).

So, I've followed the spawning of Ubuntu for a while and have meant to give it a go for a while now, without actually giving into that. Fast forward to now... I'm not working on Saturdays any longer and my PC has been dying for a re-build, so what better opportunity to wade into the waters of temptation. I'm not losing Windows altogether, but it's time to give this religion is shot at my soul... what the hell, eh?

I haven't quite figured out what I want to say on this here "blog" (a concept I don't completely understand by the way, which probably means I'm getting old)... and I fully understand why these are difficult to keep up. I mean, when one has an axe to grind or something to say, great! Makes for interesting reading. Want to show you have friends and the like... probably makes for interesting reading... aint got much to say or a focus, BORING!

I'm in the latter category, but that's cool. I can dig it... sort of. Does make the motivation to post to a blog a touch more on the difficult side. Actually, that whole motivation thing is difficult at best and I fully understand why blogs get posted to so infrequently. One rarely knows what's interesting to other people for one and when you don't have a focus or topic... meh!
Soo... that's my blog for now. Meh!

I've decided it's a bit strange having a website that's seemingly "all about me." I am, quite frankly, not that interesting nor deserving of an entire website devoted to myself. That said, I haven't come up with a better idea yet, so until that day dawns, it'll just be all about me!:)

Once upon a time I used it to host a guild website for Star Wars Galaxies. Funny thing about that game when it came to guilds... it was better (for the guilds) before the game launched. Afterwards, I always thought the in-game support for guilds (PAs as it called them) was rather lackluster. Of course, I can't blame the downfall of our guild entirely on that (a fair amount rested on my own shoulders), but certainly it contributed.

Like so many other aspects of the game, it over promised and under-delivered. Like a lot of other players, I had such high hopes for SWG and it was a real shame to watch it spiral out of control. I played up until the NGE and walked away after that. Tried it once afterwards just to remember the good times, as it were, but it just wasn't the same. It was like playing UO after the trammel felucca split... it just wasn't the same.

Maybe SWG has improved since the last time I gave it a go (quite possible, though I haven't had the stomach to try it after the last go). Rumors keep flying that Bioware is working on a Star Wars MMO of sorts (likely based in the Knights of the Old Republic era)... I think that could be interesting if it happens, but I'm not holding my breath on that just yet. As a company, they've got enough interesting properties that any one of them could make a decent MMO. I do hope they continue making single player games, because at least with those one need not worry about their account being hacked by some dick in china (which is why I'll not be playing a blizzard MMO any time soon).

So, this site (and blog) are all about me now. If you've made it this far... good for you! Hope you've managed to find something here to make it worth your time. And now, back to our regular scheduled programming.

In fact, I think before I spent much time at gamespot or found it, it had been happy puppy that had occupied so much of my time (must have been in the late 90s I suppose).

Anyway, on the off chance you haven't been following the story and it's news to you... Jeff Gerstmann was an editor at gamespot who was terminated in November for penning a bad review of a game (Kane & Lynch) where the company (Eidos) had spent a large sum of dollars in advertising with the site. It didn't used to be that you could purchase your reviews at gamespot, but apparently that's no longer the case.

It's been well covered over the web since it happened and so I wont really delve into it further as I don't have much to add to the subject (other than I'll not be renewing my membership with gamespot in the future). Recommend you read the article posted at Sam Kennedy's blog on 1up.com: http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=...UserId=4561231. Used to really enjoy flying around in MS Flight Sim and taking pictures, but it lost its allure after a while. I spent a lot of time tweaking my machine and the simulator to get it looking good and running decent. In the end, it was either option A or option B, but never seemed to achieve both. Looked pretty, ran like crap. Ran great, looked like crap. FSX came out with promise, but mostly ran like crap (and didn't look all that much better compared to FS9 with addons). My interest dwindled after a machine rebuild necessitated a reinstall. So, while my shots (here: http://www.eyelleye.net/images/showgallery.php?cat=501 ) aren't up to what you'll see elsewhere (say some of the work you'll see here... amazing really: http://screenshotartist.co.uk/ ), they're up on the off chance you're interested.
Also dropped off a couple photo's of my cat. I've got still more shots to upload (plus other photo's I've taken) but they'll need downsizing a bit before I get to that. Perhaps this weekend. On that note, the header links aren't all working in the gallery section (blogs particularly) and I don't have a link to the gallery in the rest of the site yet... on my todo list for the weekend.

So far, not so much up there yet. I've got a number of images to go through that I'll be adding to the gallery in the coming weeks, but it's not something I'll be getting to in an evening (or this evening for that matter).

Just some of my old Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) screen shots up there right at the moment. I'll be adding to that gallery with the ones I think worth showing (like real photo's I get about 75% crap and a few real gems). I also plan on adding to a couple other galleries (not yet created) of some actual photo's I've taken (some recent, some not so).

Anyway, that's what I'm working on at the moment. No grand plans for this site (or my life for that matter), but I can't just sit around and do nothing all the time.
