I want to try to put one together for the Drunks, but have no idea what I would need to do.
So Eye or B, a little Getting your own web page for dummies would be cool :p

Well, I'll recommend the host I use & Be uses...

http://www.jaguarpc.com/?loc=hosting

If you pay annually, its only 7.95 per month. If you pay by the month, its 9.95 per month. Plus you'll need a domain name, usually about 10 bucks a year.

Thats the cost portion of it. Forums can be had for free... I can help you setup that if you so desire. There are also some portal software available too, depending on what you want. Or you can just do it plain jane html, up to you. If you do get a site through Jag, be sure to either give me or Be a referral... we'll get a free month. Once you have a "site" up on the WWW I can help you out with getting things setup n whatnot. I'd recommend be thinking about what you want for a website... maybe visit some other guild websites and note down what you like/dont like... etc. Something for either myself or Be to have a gander at.

So how do I go about getting a domain name? Does that site take care of everything I'll need or will I have to hit up another site as well?

They have a registar as well. http://aletianic.com/ (jag pc bought aletia... which is how I became their customer initially). I have my domain names registered through aletianic & it works fairly slick & easy. I've also used godaddy.com & that worked fairly easy as well... but, I'd recommend aletianic simply because its part of jaguarpc.com

In fact, when you go to sign up for your hosting at jaguarpc.com, they offer to setup a domain name for you, using aletianic. That'd be the easiest route really, as then if you have problems all your support folks are in one place.

Just bumping this to the top. Oh I would need to pay the 7-9 dollars a month for each domain right? Say If I wanted a guild web site and a family web site, I'd need to pay for 2 domains or is there a way to Jew the man?

Well you need 2 components. A web hosting service where your actual website(s) will be. Then you have your domain name which makes sure www.CraysSite.net or whatever will point to the right files stored with your hosting service.

Depending on what hosting package you get, you can have as many domains as you like.
For example I have a 1&1 business account. I'm running my own site to test my not so mad HTML skillz, but also (once the domain transfer takes place!) will be hosting the site for the adult learning center I work at. Both have seperate domain names.

To answer your question, yes you would have to pay for 2 domains, plus a hosting service. Alternativley you could have 1 domain and use sub-domains for your websites if the hosting service supports this. For example I have alpha.project45.net for my really basic first baby step HTML stuff. Which is seperate from www.project45.net
I can have (I think) as many sub-domains as I like. But then I'm on the business package. I think it cost me £70 for a year (including the domain name) Which is about $150.

What kind of site you looking to make? Will it get a lot of traffic? I have 2.5Gigs of storage and a 20GB monthly bandwidth allowance that aren't being used much. If you want (for a small price of course!) I could register your domain and I'll host your web stuff. I can provide you your own FTP account and you can have as many email adresses as you like.

Alternatively if you want to be really cheap, I can create you a sub-domain for free. But you'll have to have your website be like craysdrunks.project45.net or something.

Pretty much what he said... '-)

JaguarPC.net has the ability to do subdomains as well... I just don't bother with em much myself (at the moment) as I have no real need. You can read about Jags plans here: http://www.jaguarpc.com/?loc=hosting
but the sum-up version is, 7.95 per month if you pay yearly... or 9.95 per month paid monthly. For that you get 5GB disk space, 75GB monthly transfer, 5 add-on domains (diff from subdomain I believe)... unlimited this and that... etc. You register a domain name(s) for around 10 bucks per year...

Sooo... I pay on a yearly basis. I have 3 domains. Right now, they all point here (eyelleye.com, eyelleye.net, eyelleye.info)... and, by the look of it: http://www.jaguarpc.com/?loc=multipledomains I could have each domain name point to a seperate directory and be its own website basically. Right now Im just parking those domains.

Sooo cray... if you wanna go solo... yeah, there's your way to "jew the man." Otherwise, you might explore James' offer. '-)

And then, of course, there are different server technologies too... Open source is the way to go for cheapiness... but then Im thinking of getting a .NET webhost in addition to this one... as soon as I get my hands on a copy of visual studio that is... '-)
